Suncoast Jazz Festival II

In photographing the festival, my plan was to go for tight shots of faces, hands, feet, and instruments.  This eliminates all the stage clutter - mikes, cords, music stands, and amps - from the image.  This shot is two for one: face and hand.  What often provides interest in an image is gesture or expression.  Here you get gesture in both the facial expression and the action of the hand.

Suncoast Jazz Festival

These swing dancers provided an opportunity for artistic expression.  I purposely shot this image with a slow shutter speed to record some of the motion.  The red twirling skirt was an excellant subject for this technique.

Fun With Corel Painter

I really enjoy Corel Painter.  It gives me a whole new set of options for my photographs.  I have been successful in painting selected images and selling these through decorators and art galleries.  This example shows images produced with different Corel brushes.  The upper left image retains detail using the round camelhair oil brush.  The image below it gets its strong painted look from the Sargent brush.  The image on the right is the result of blocking in with the square chalk and then bringing out detail with the air brush.

Shooting Sports

Sports is action.  But, sometimes there is another story to tell.  This shot caught the athletes in a lifeguard competition exhausted from their efforts.  It is good to stay alert to everything that is going on at sporting events.

High School Play

I’ve had the opportunity to photograph several plays that my grandson was in.  I have learned to take a shot of the set background before the action starts.  This shot is perfect for the background layer in composing a composite image.  In this example, I duplicated the background layer in Photoshop, changed the blend mode to Darken, and blurred to get the effect I wanted.  Then I flatened the layers and pulled in three additional layers from images of him dancing on stage.  With these layers, I tried various blending modes until I got something that I liked.
